Ways to Make Money — Internet Writing Markets

Everyone has a story to tell. Perhaps it’s a family history, the struggle your ancestors went through to leave a bad situation behind and move to a new country. Maybe it’s your personal struggle with disease, addiction, or making ends meet from day-to-day. You may be a poet, a novelist, or a travel writer.

No matter what story you have to tell, there’s a way to make money with your words.

Not sure how?

The best way is to go where the readers are, and today, that’s on the Web. A century ago, or even a few decades ago, we jumped through a lot of hoops to get published and make some money. Today, it’s a whole lot easier!

Let me introduce you to a few people who may inspire you to turn your stories into ways to make money.

Ariana Huffington tops my list of inspirational bloggers, putting her political views out front and pulling in about $30,000 per day (yes, you read that right!), with her blog, the Huffington Post, before she sold it to AOL for US$315 million!

Of course, she’s not the only blogger to make big bucks! See this list of the top 35 earning bloggers – https://income.com/4100/27-bloggers-who-make-amazing-money-from-their-blogs/ – for an inspiring list of writers to follow.

I wish there’d been an Internet when my kids were small, so I could have joined the ranks of mommy bloggers–women staying home to raise their kids and write. Thousands of women have been able to replace their traditional workplace earnings with even more $$$. Here’s an article about two moms who make over $40,000 per year: http://www.theworkathomewoman.com/moms-earning-money-blogging/

And blogging isn’t just an outlet to talk about raising the kids either for these mommy bloggers. Meagan Paullin’s into couponing and frugal living, while Mandy Rose grew her interest in decorating and DYI projects.

Both these moms figured out how to write what they wanted and monetize (add money-making opportunities) to their publications. There’s a lot of potential there!

This great article from Blog Tyrant owner, an under-30 young man from South Australia who sold one of his blogs on fitness for the healthy sum of $20,000, gives some tips that work for all bloggers, not just moms: http://www.blogtyrant.com/stay-home-moms-make-good-money-blogs-online-business/

It doesn’t really matter what you want to write about. If you can use a word processor and express yourself, writing is one of the best ways to make money on the Web.

Check out some of these highly successful Web writers:

Car Advice content website – Earns around $70,000 a month. http://www.caradvice.com.au/

Expert Photography content website – Earns around $30,000 a month. https://expertphotography.com/

Hugh Howey, E-Book Millionaire – http://www.goexplore.net/internet-heroes/meet-hugh-howey-e-book-millionaire/

Lindsay Buroker decided to try on a pen-name and made $3043 in ebook sales in the book’s first month – http://www.lindsayburoker.com/amazon-kindle-sales/pen-name-launch-first-month-earnings-marketing/

All of these authors will tell you that developing a successful blog or content website or book writing career is hard work. They’ll also tell you that it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do–and I agree.

I “met” all of these writers virtually this past winter while I was doing revisions to one of my courses, Introduction to Internet Writing Markets, which will be re-launched in June (2015). It was one of the most exciting and rewarding writing experiences I’ve had in a long time, as I’ve added ways to use Internet writing markets for content marketing and for the all-important developing of your writer’s profile or brand, as well as showing writers how to find and submit to markets on the Web, publish and monetize their own content, understand and respect copyright law, and so much more.

If you’ve been inspired by an author or blogger on the Web, please tell me in the comments. I’d love to meet them!
